Cherry by Nico Walker

A raw, bleakly hilarious and poignant novel written by a young man currently serving an 11-year sentence for crimes he committed as he desperately searched for money to feed his opioid addiction.  While not strictly autobiographical, much of what is in the book mirrors his experiences as a college dropout, a soldier in Iraq who returned with a severe case of PTSD, an opioid addict and a bank robber.  It has been said that his style of writing echoes that of Ernest Hemingway.

“I first heard of ‘Cherry’ when some colleagues and I were throwing around book discussion options on the opioid crisis. Someone mentioned ‘Cherry’ but said it might be a bit much for the general public. That’s when I knew it would be a good fit for the 20|30ish group.
